Conservapedia

I'm not terribly trusting of everything in Wikipedia, due to the fact that the site is open to be edited freely. But this certainly isn't the alternative I would have thought to look for if I had not read about it in the The Age this morning:
Conservapedia

Just looking at the first article I could find on the site, I have found in the first para solid evidence that this site is probably even more unreliable than good old Wiki.

This para is trying to convince me that abortion will cause breast cancer. Quote...
The vast majority of scientific studies have shown that abortion causes an increase in breast cancer, including 16 out of 17 statistically significant studies. Studies showing that abortion increases breast cancer predate the political controversy.

That line is all good and well, but lets read on to the the second half of the para...

It is undisputed that having a baby protects against breast cancer, and thus early termination of pregnancy must increase the risk of cancer for the mother compared to carrying that same pregnancy to birth. Yet the abortion industry conceals this increased risk, just as the tobacco industry concealed its cancer risk for decades.

Now this is the part of their opening para that has destroyed their credibility for me. Okay maybe I'm looking into the wording too much but please note my highlighting of the word "must". One only needs to do some reading about critical thinking and analysis of arguments to see that this is an argument with no real validity just due to the use of that one word.
When someone is saying something must they generally don't have any concrete evidence to back this up. And reading on they don't present me with any concrete evidence!
Then there is their comparison of the abortion industry being comparable to the tobacco industry in their concealment of this medical "fact" that they are talking about.
Now I'm not about to start any kind of debate on abortion, its a subject I prefer to leave alone, but I have not seen this 'fact' covered up. I have read about the possibility of an increased risk of breast cancer in these cases and have also seen that its not concrete fact, only possible. But its just a great example of how skewed the site is and will be on certain topics.

Oh and just looking at their references for this particular piece I found one entitled "Self-checks 'useless' in breast cancer fight" WTF?!?! I am so not going to start on that one.
I'm just going to stop here or I may never stop poking holes in this site. I seriously hope that the predictions of the site creator are wrong and that this site will not form a valid and standard point of reference for American schools in the future. No offence intended but do American children really need this craziness in their minds?

13 Insights or Insults:

There are no studies that have found a real association between abortion and breast cancer, and if there was an association it would not establish or prove a causal relationship between the two events.

Some studies have tried to claim a causal link between roll on deodorant and breast cancer too; and also shaving underarms and breast cancer. Neither true.

There are studies that suggest pregnancy is a weak protective factor against breast cancer, but it doesn't logically follow that NOT giving birth - ie, having an abortion - actually CREATES cancer, which is the logic they are using.

Notice how doctors and politicians don’t run around exhorting women to give birth at least once so as to PROTECT against ever getting breast cancer? Gosh, I wonder why?

By their logic the 20% of pregnancies that end in a natural miscarriage would also CREATE breast cancer later in life. If that was true then breast cancer rates would be the highest cancer rates of any cancer in the world, and that isn't anywhere near true.

Bless the American fundamentalists, for they have sinned.

Deliberately perpetuating ignorance and / or instilling lies in lieu of truth seems criminal to me, but, hey, it's the Internet, let them romp free like the rest of us.

I just think it should be a restricted site, with blocked access for anyone under 35 years, and anyone with an average or under average IQ should be blocked from viewing the site's content for their entire lives.

It should be a very elite site, and definitely no access for kiddies.

Hooray! Babies prevent cancer! Is there anything babies can't do?

Chazz 7 March 2007 at 3:41 pm

LOL yes lets all have babies to prevent cancer. And then we can let them use Conservapidia as an educational tool and we can see how buggered up it makes them lol

Caz 7 March 2007 at 6:18 pm

Oh Tim, that's beautiful.

So, when are you going to start on your health plan Timmy?

TimT 9 March 2007 at 10:49 am

I have a few anatomical difficulties to surmount. I'm just off to grow a womb now - it's never too late to start!

Chazz 9 March 2007 at 2:51 pm

Well its all good and well to grow the womb but how is the baby going to come out :/
:P

Caz 9 March 2007 at 6:16 pm

Tim, where your health and wellbeing is concerned it really is never too late, and even the small steps are better than no steps.

I say: Good for you; you grow that womb!

Baby - don't discourage him. It's not often you get the opportunity to encourage someone to become a social experiment.

Chazz 10 March 2007 at 3:48 pm

Oh Im sure a nice caeser would do him... just wouldnt want that baby to try and get out any other way thats all hehehehehe

TimT 12 March 2007 at 11:19 am

'A nice caesar'? You make me sound like a salad.

Chazz 12 March 2007 at 3:11 pm

HAHAHA well caesers arn't THAT bad. But then again I was on morphine so i don't really remember hehehe Maybe it was like a salad :D

James Waterton 12 March 2007 at 9:42 pm

My mum had an operation recently and was hooked up to one of those self-administering morphine pumps. Silly sausage didn't use a drop!! What a waste. And they wouldn't let me take her ration home, either.

Chazz 13 March 2007 at 2:11 pm

LMAO James!
When I woke up from surgery and they were trying to tell me to push the button to administer the morphine I wouldnt push it because I was so groggy I didnt know what they were talking about.
But once I had woken up properly they still had to remind me to push the button most times. So I can relate to your mum not having it. They usually have you on so much other stuff you just dont feel the need for it.

James Waterton 18 March 2007 at 11:14 pm

Sounds as though you had a good excuse for not using it, though you must try harder next time.

My mum, however, wasn't groggy at all. I said, g'wan mum, have a hit! And she said but I'm not in much pain! And I said why don't you let your hair down a little bit?

But she didn't listen.
